Responsibilities
General Post Office is a central office under postal services
department, Government of Nepal. It is located in Sundhara,
Which is the heart of the Kathmandu Metropolitan City. Its main
responsibilities are:
* Handling all inbound mail from foreign postal administration
to Nepal.
* Handling all outbound mail from Nepal to foreign postal
administration.
* Providing all types of postal services at its own premises and
at different post offices and counters in Kathmandu district.
* Delivering Letters, Parcel, EMS and other articles within the
Kathmandu district.
* Providing postal banking and money order services at its own
counter.
Registration:
If you are sending important articles it is better to use safe
way. For registered articles a record is kept at all stages and
delivered to the addressee or authorized person against a
signature. You can book registered items at any postal counter
and receipt will be given.
Also there is provision of compensation up to 30 SDR for
registered articles.
All types of postal articles can be registered. But registration
is compulsory for the following:
* Parcels
* Insured articles
* The article for which a custom declaration is required
* The article bearing the word 'Registered' on the envelope.
* The article, which contained cheque, hundi, bill etc.
* The registered article, which is reposted after having been
delivered.
The charge for registration is payable in addition to the
postage for the item.
Advice of delivery
If you want to receive delivery proof of your registered article
you can use this service. For this special service you have to
fill a form and pay additional fee. After delivery of registered
article the form signed by addressee will be returned to your
address.

Insurance:
This is a highly secured service. For worthy things such as
currency notes, coin or other important things you have to use
this service. For the insured letter insurance fee is payable in
addition to the normal postage and registration fee. This
service is available only for Nepal and India.

Blind Literature
Magazine, Newspaper, Books, Sound records etc. which are in
Braille or specially printed or recorded for blind are called
blind literature.
If sender or receiver of blind literature is a educational
institution recognized by government of Nepal that can be sent
free of cost.
The size of blind literature will be as same as letter. The
maximum weight limit is 7 Kg. It can be registered by paying
registration charge.

Commercial samples, which are not bearing sales price, can be
sent under this special service. The packaging should be strong

Printed Matter/Book Post/News Paper
All types of printed matter such as News Paper, Books,
Pamphlets, Visiting Cards, Address Cards, Engraving Photo, Photo

engraved, Printed Lithographed or Mimeo graphed comes under this
category.

Registered Newspaper
Newspaper, which is registered at the post office, can be sent
at subsidized rate to the foreign countries and free of charge
within the Nepal. It has to fulfill following criteria to be
registered Newspaper.
* Newspaper should be published regularly within 32 or less
days.
* It has to be registered by concerned authority.
Registration can be made at any post office by filling a from
provided by the post office and submitting following documents:
* Registration certificate.
* A list of subscribers (Minimum 30 Subscribers)
* 2 copies of newspaper
Aerogram
It is an airmail letter in the form of a lightweight sheet of
stationary that folds into its own envelop for mailing at low
postage rate. Also called air letter.

Booking
Parcel can be booked at counter of designated post offices. All
parcel which are intended to send abroad must be presented at
the counter of the custom office. After completing custom's
procedure and sealed by custom it will be booked.
Delivery
After receiving the parcel at post office, addressee will be
informed by sending an intimation card. Addressee should come to
the post office with the intimation card and an identity card to
collect the parcel. If the parcel is from abroad custom
clearance is required.
