Sales mission to Australia organised

Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) organized Nepal Sales Mission to Australian cities of Melbourne, Brisbane and Sydney from June 30 to July 4.

NTB promoted culture, history, wildlife and golfing in Australia. Apart from Mt. Everest and Himalayas, NTB also promoted Nepal as the birth place of Lord Buddha and home to legendary Gorkha soldiers.

'Australian travellers are seeking new experiences and new destinations when they travel One of their key requirements is that the destination is real and the travel experience authentic. The main segments of outbound travellers from Australia are Backpacker/Youth and “Baby Boomers. Travel and enjoyment of life is a key motivation for this sector. To attract these segments the sales mission was an endeavour to explain the Australian agents just what Nepal has to offer their clients,' reads a press statement issued by NTB.

The sales mission attracted more than 250 tour operators and media representatives in the three cities. NTB also awarded 8-day Nepal trip to winners of lucky draw that it conducted on each of the three cities.

NTB has identified Australia as a country having potential of market expansion. Around 10,000 Australian visitors visit Nepal every year. The number of Australian visitors to Nepal increased by 42% in 2007.-TAAN

TAAN, NATTA meet tourism secretary over Tibet issues

July, 10, A delegation of Trekking Agencies' Association of Nepal (TAAN) and Nepal Association of Tours and Travel Agents (NATTA) met secretary at the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation (MoCTCA) and apprised him of the losses that the industry incurred with the closure of Tibet Autonomous Region of China.

The delegation also requested secretary Poudel to take initiatives and formally request the Chines authorities to start issuing visa from Nepal. Secretary Poudel said that he was aware of the implications of Tibet closure and he would help raise the issue at government's level.

China had stopped foreign visitors from visiting Tibet after riots in Lhasa in mid-March. Though it said that Tibet has been opened to foreign visitors from July, Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu is yet to issue any visa to foreign visitors.

Approximately, 20,000 foreigners travel to Tibet from Nepal every year.-TAAN

Chopper crashes in Annapurna BC

A helicopter of Fishtail Air met with an accident in Annapurna Base Camp on June 29 as it was about to take off carrying three foreigners to Kathmandu. All the four passengers—three French trekkers and one crew member—are reported to be safe.

According to Pokhara Airport, the AIA Ecquirrel chopper, which came directly from Kathmandu without informing the nearest airport, plunged into a pond after its tail hit a boulder, immediately after it scrambled due to adverse weather conditions. Though the chopper escaped with serious damage, its rear part has partially been damaged.

The chopper was summoned in the Annapurna Base Camp by a group of French trekkers to lift an 80-year old trekker to Kathmandu.-TAAN
